Experiential Learning
We challenge our students to work hard in the classroom. However, we also stress the importance of getting involved with chemistry outside of the classroom and exploring the discipline in the lab, on the job and around the world.
Undergraduate research is a fundamental part of this, but the opportunities don’t stop there.
Study Abroad
University of Richmond students—particularly those in the sciences—are encouraged to conduct research or independent study with an international focus. Richmond offers 75 study abroad programs in 30 countries, many of which offer the possibility of a strong research component. Programs are available during the academic year and over the summer.
Contact the Office of International Education or the Department of Chemistry for more information.
Internships
Chemistry students are encouraged to seek research experiences or intense internships in the field as part of their overall curriculum. Richmond helps students find such opportunities through a strong network of organizations and companies throughout the region. These serve not only to provide critical learning experiences for students, but often serve as springboards to careers after graduation.
Contact the Career Development Center or the Department of Chemistry for more information.
Student Employment
In addition to research experiences or internships, students may work within the chemistry department as office assistants, stockroom assistants, lab teaching assistants and lab prep assistants, earning extra income and gaining valuable skills that will prove beneficial in their careers.
