Research:
Research in Professor Myers' laboratory proceeds in two principal areas. First, for some time we have had underway an investigation into the relationship between 1H NMR spectra and molecular crowding in highly hindered amine-borane compounds. The effort this year seeks to complete one major block of this work and will involve the synthesis of a specific group of methylpyridine complexes to confirm their identity through elemental analysis. As a byproduct, we expect to acquire on our new instrument more detailed NMR spectra (1H and other nuclei) on these compounds. Second, since 1990, we have been in a collaboration with a research group at the University of Virginia in an effort focused on the organic chemistry of pyrroles as modified by coordination to an osmium-amine complex. This summer, we were able to synthesize a molecule possessing the skeletal structure of a family of natural products, pyrrolizidines. This year, we will be investigating both alternative routes to molecules of this type and their derivative chemistry. There is a particular interest in this class of compounds since it includes a molecule which has shown potent anti-AIDS activity in initial tests.
